The Kanrin Maru Monument

The first Japanese envoy to the United States, the Kanrin Maru, came to the United States via San Francisco in 1860. After San Francisco, the Kanrin Maru went on to greet then President Buchanan in New York. The stone monument near San Francisco's Legion of Honor was a gift to San Francisco from Osaka to commemorate the opening of relations between Japan and America.
