Shitenno-ji Temple

Shitenno-ji Temple in Osaka was founded in 593, the oldest official temple in Japan.

Osaka: the First Capital of Japan

The Silk Road lead to Osaka, serving as the gateway to ancient Japan. Around the 5th century A.D., Asian continental culture was introduced to Japan via the Korean peninsula, and Osaka became the center of politics and culture in Japan. The first capital of Japan was established in Osaka in the 7th century.

Medieval times: Wars and Sakai's Golden Age

Around the end of the 12 century, political power fell into the hands of the warrior class and civil war spread throughout Japan. However, in Sakai City in the Southern area of modern Osaka Prefecture, a golden age began. Sakai experienced great prosperity as an international port due to the Japanese naval missions to China from the area. The art of the Japanese tea ceremony was perfected in Sakai.

Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle was built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who unified Japan.

Osaka Municipal Central Public Hall was first opened in 1918 and recently designatefd a national cultural asset in 2003

The Kitchen of the Nation and The Meiji Restoration

Although the political capital relocated to Tokyo (Edo) in the 17th century, Osaka continued to play a vital role in managing the nation's economy and distribution of goods -- thereby gaining the nickname "The Kitchen of the Nation." After recovering a first time from the the confusion of the Meiji Restoration and again from World War II devastation, Osaka continues to play a major role as a commercial center of Japan.

Modern Osaka

Following WWII Osaka quickly modernized and continues to be the center of industry and technology in Japan. Osaka's rich history is what helps the city to encompass both the tradition and history, as well as modern convienences.

EXPO 70
